CommUnity Mural Project: Embracing the Greater Logan Heights Through Art
.In the heart of San Diego’s historic Logan Heights, a bold and vibrant transformation is underway. The CommUnity Mural Project is more than just public art—it is a celebration of culture, identity, and resilience, led by the talented hands and vision of local artists with support from the Logan Heights Community Development Corporation (CDC).
Stretching across two major gateways into the neighborhood—Interstate 5 and State Route 15 at Imperial Avenue—this mural initiative infuses the urban landscape with color, meaning, and pride. At the I-5 underpass, murals will tell the layered story of Logan Heights: where it began, where it stands today, and where it’s headed. On the concrete pillars of SR-15, art will pulse with rhythm and movement, honoring the musical traditions that have long been the heartbeat of the community.
What makes this project especially powerful is its foundation in community collaboration. From the beginning, residents of Logan Heights were invited to participate through workshops, dialogues, and creative sessions. Their stories, voices, and visions became the building blocks of the designs. Many of the artists, themselves rooted in the neighborhood, brought these visions to life with authenticity and care.
The I-5 murals are being produced on polytab—a flexible material suited for large-scale, durable installations—and will be applied to the underpass walls using specialized adhesives and protective finishes. In contrast, the SR-15 murals will be painted directly onto the structural pillars, using bold color palettes and expressive imagery that echo the sound and soul of Logan Heights.
This project stands as a living tribute to the strength and creativity of a community that continues to rise, thrive, and shape its own narrative. Through this collective effort, the streets of Logan Heights will speak louder than ever—telling the world who they are, where they come from, and where they’re going.
