CommUNITY Mural: Celebrating Culture and Honoring History through the Arts

The CommUNITY Mural Project is a vibrant expression of Greater Logan Heights’ rich cultural heritage and shared history. At its heart are the dedicated local artists—residents with deep community ties and decades of experience—who bring these stories to life through their powerful murals.

Below are the biographies of the core artists who have passionately developed the artwork showcased along the I-5 and SR-15 freeways, creating lasting symbols of pride and unity for the neighborhood they proudly call home.

The artists leading the CommUnity Mural Project are longtime residents of Greater Logan Heights with deep roots in the community and decades of experience in visual arts and mural painting. Below are brief biographies highlighting the core artists who have brought their passion and expertise to the stunning murals installed along the I-5 and SR-15 freeways—the gateways to the neighborhood they proudly call home.

Daniel “Dentlok” Angeles

Daniel “Dentlok” Angeles

Daniel “Dentlok” Angeles was born In Mexico City and raised in San Diego, CA. He grew up with the Chicano culture, cholos, low riders and tattoos. Art has been a part of his life since he can remember. Now, he uses it to paint canvases, tattoos and murals. He has a deep love for San Diego and hopes to use his skills to help it stay beautiful, one mural at a time.

Shirish Villaseñor

Shirish Villaseñor

Shirish Villaseñor is a local artist and muralist using surreal imagery to create a world where one’s imagination immerses them within the art. Shirish uses color theory and natural elements as a motif for positive energy in the community. She values the small details in her work, frequently used to for storytelling in her pieces.

Kim Phillips-Pea

Kim Phillips-Pea

Kim Phillips-Pea was born and raised in San Diego, California. Throughout the years Kim has been involved in a variety of creative activities including mural installations individually and with local artists, curating exhibits, hosting paint parties, hosting art camp and volunteering in the Southeast San Diego community. Kim is co-founder of the Southeast Art Team which began as SD Hip Hop 5K Art Team and has volunteered at local organizations including the Friends of Malcolm X Library and Diamond Business Association. Kim's current projects include working with the City of San Diego Parks and Recs - Parks After Dark, CalTrans to beautify local freeways and underpasses, and sharing space with local entrepreneurs and artists at Oya Art Gallery & Boutique in Logan Heights. The art gallery celebrated its 1 year anniversary in September 2022. Kim recently launched the San Diego Every Drop of Paint Tour which showcases landmarks, murals and the artists behind the beautification in local neighborhoods.

David Mena

David Mena

David Mena was born and raised in the Logan community, where he discovered his passion for art at a young age. As a child, he would spend hours sketching and painting, exploring different techniques, and experimenting with colors. Through his captivating murals, Mena tells stories, celebrates cultures, and evokes emotions. A remarkable muralist, whose brushstrokes have the power to breathe life into blank canvases, both large and small. Mena has become renowned for his vibrant and captivating artworks that adorn houses, community walls, and private residences

Raquel Rhone

Raquel Rhone

Raquel Rhone is an Artist and Graphic Designer. Raquel was born and raised in San Diego, California. She graduated from San Diego State University in 2013 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Graphic Design. Currently, she freelances as a Mural Artist and Graphic Designer, and also does commission artwork. Raquel is apart of a team of artists called the Southeast San Diego Art Team, a group of local artists who collaborate on community beautification projects and art related events. So far in her career, she has worked on art projects commissioned by San Diego Gas & Electric, Blue Shield California, Downtown San Diego Partnership, Paving Great Futures, Somali Family Services of San Diego, Black San Diego & more.

Isabel Garcia

Isabel Garcia

Isabel Garcia is a Chicana illustrator, muralist, and painter from Southeast San Diego. Her work consists of various styles of vibrant portraiture and illustration, small and large-scale murals, world-building, and character design that highlight her culture, as well as embrace the weird and the beauty of life. Along with her passion for creating, Isabel aims to promote arts education and its value, both as an educator and creative collaborator in underrepresented communities.

Brandon Fudge

Brandon Fudge

Brandon Fudge is a founding member of The Horrible Monster Scene, which was started around 2013 in Chula Vista. Brandon and Adrian, whom had the initial idea of starting a tight knit crew made of a few friends, started from black books and blank stickers then naturally moved up to art shows and murals. Their art is a deep seated message that they do not conform to the norms and are willing to be individual in the art world. They rely heavily on pastel colors and bold lines that always pop out and catch your attention. They don’t believe in gatekeepers in the art scene which means we will pass in any opportunity to anyone wanting to express themselves in their art or music.

Jose Guzman

Jose "Mister" Guzman

Jose "Mister" Guzman was born in Tecate, Baja California, Mister is an empirical artist who grew up in the graffiti scene in a border city, working on his very own technique and style. In 2006 he emigrated to San Diego and has been part of several artistic exhibitions. , installation of small and large murals, number of collaborations with other artists. His tendencies are to simulate the effects of light and shadows in three-dimensional pieces as well as realism in his own style. Mister comments that in most of his works they always tell a story or part of his own. Currently as part of the San Diego Community he seeks to beautify the streets with some of the many mural ideas he has. He is always looking for walls for his ideas, no matter if they are small or giant!

Larry Conde & Olga Skubski

Larry Conde and Olga Skubski serve as curators in the urban development beatification in the Logan Heights Art District. They organize painting party events within the community and assist in getting legal approval for projects. They call upon a collective action by volunteer artists to promote a vibrant multicultural community. They’re both from the surrounding neighborhoods and have over 30 years in the area, combined. They formed an organization called San Diego Writerz and have collaborated with street artists, muralist ,tattoo artists, graffiti artists, painters and more to enhance artistic imagination and harmony.

Marlon Robers (aka Dreks)

Marlon Robers (aka Dreks) was born and raised in San Diego, growing up in the Logan Heights, Golden Hill, and North Park neigborhoods. His passion of art and music has been apparent since the 80s, participating in B Boy dancing, DJIng, and graffiti art to name a few talents. His graffiti art has been featured at various events and murals over the past 35 years in San Diego, including:

  • The Comic Con wall mural at Commercial and 16th street, which he later painted over as the Thundercats mural (which still stands today)
  • The MC Hustle and Boondocks mural in the famous San Diego Custom Shoes factory
  • The annual Kings of Styles event
Maria Islas

Maria Islas

Maria Islas is a Mexican-American artist raised in Logan Heights since the age of 5. She is a self-taught artist, drawing since as long as she can remember. She is a part-time artist and sitter to her beautiful grandbabies.

Romeo Valle

Romeo Valle was born and raised in San Diego, attended Logan Elementary and Point Loma High School. He has always been interested in art in many types of forms and mediums. He has been active by making paintings for friends and family in the past, and participated in painting murals throughout the city. Romeo sees himself enjoying the journey and the creative art process as long as possible in service of the community

Jesse “bust1” Ortiz

Jesse “bust1” Ortiz was born in raised in San Diego and first got into art by creating hand drawn illustrations for UCSD patients. Other members of his family taught him how to paint with pastels, how to add color to my drawings, how to spray paint, etc. After spray painting letters and characters around San Diego, Jesse has several legal walls around San Diego, including:

  • The Linda Vista Alley wall
  • The Old Town Wall with pengone
  • A portrait of Arsenio Hall for a Fox channel 6 commercial

Jesse has worked with for 20/20 Studios Sign Co. and spent time illustrating, painting and selling canvas work at a gallery in Las Vegas. His vision for the future in art is seeing more spray paint art in galleries in the brighter parts of San Diego.
